PAWS has learned that in some pet stores live mice and rats are kept as feeder animals for snakes. Members have reported that these animals have even had their tails systematically chopped off to feed baby snakes, a piece at a time ... of course with no anesthesia or subsequent care of the amputated tail stump. Mice and rats, both mammals, are warehoused in overcrowded cages in backrooms often without adequate food and water (or none) and fed live to exotic snakes in the pet store or sold as food for home use. If you observe bad conditions for so-called "feeder animals" in any pet store, please report your observation, along with the name and address of the store to PAWS.
